Kagune Types Deep Dive

Before choosing a specific Kagune weapon in Ro-Ghoul, it helps to understand the type system underneath. Every Ghoul Kagune falls into one of five biological categories — Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku, Bikaku, or Chimera — plus the special transformation category Kakuja. Each type has a distinct combat identity: how it plays, what it rewards, and where it struggles. This guide breaks down every type so you can match your preferred playstyle to the right category before spending RC or Yen on a specific weapon.

Ukaku — The ranged attacker

Ukaku Ghouls fight at distance using projectile salvos. The defining trait is kiting: fire projectiles while repositioning, never stay still, and punish opponents who close the gap without blocking.

Playstyle: High mobility, constant repositioning, pressure through range. Ukaku excels in open spaces where you control the engagement distance. In tight indoor zones or against opponents who close fast, Ukaku players must master dash timing to maintain distance.

Strengths: Strong ranged pressure, good at punishing slow opponents, effective in Matchmaking for controlling pace.

Weaknesses: Fragile if rushed — a single clean close-range combo can end an Ukaku before they reset. Requires more mechanical skill than some other types.

Representative weapons: Touka Kirishima (fast projectiles, mode-switching), Eto Yoshimura (burst projectile spam), Akuma No Ketsueki (healing + flight + ranged).

Koukaku — The defender

Koukaku Ghouls sacrifice range for durability and blocking power. Their Kagune forms tend toward melee axes and hammers with high block values and sustained damage in extended fights.

Playstyle: Patient, block-first, punish after opponent overcommits. Koukaku rewards reading opponents and timing counters rather than aggressive rushing.

Strengths: High effective HP through block, strong in extended fights, good against aggressive glass builds that rely on winning in one rotation.

Weaknesses: Short reach means you must close distance before dealing damage. Slow approach makes you vulnerable to ranged types.

Representative weapons: Lycan (sustained melee), Shuu Tsukiyama (underrated but underperforming — see tier list).

Rinkaku — The all-rounder

Rinkaku Ghouls combine reach with self-sustain through healing lines. The type rewards versatile players who can adapt between ranged pressure and melee mixups.

Playstyle: Flexible — engage at range with Rinkaku tendrils, close for melee combos, retreat to heal through sustain. Rinkaku is the most forgiving type for players still learning matchups.

Strengths: Balanced stats, strong self-sustain, good reach, forgiving skill floor.

Weaknesses: No single extreme — not the fastest, tankiest, or highest damage. A Jack of all trades that can be out-specialized by focused builds.

Representative weapons: Ken Kaneki (the gold standard), Kichimaru Washuu (massive hitboxes).

Bikaku — The speedster

Bikaku Ghouls prioritize mobility and quick combos over raw damage or range. Their Kagune forms tend toward daggers and scythes that enable fast repositioning and multi-hit sequences.

Playstyle: Strike fast, reposition immediately, never stay in range of a counter-attack. Bikaku is about creating and closing gaps rapidly.

Strengths: Fast animations, good for players who prefer out-speeding opponents rather than out-building them.

Weaknesses: Lower damage per hit means Bikaku must land multiple sequences to secure kills. Poor against tank builds that weather the initial burst.

Representative weapons: Nishiki Nishio (budget starter with a decent Kakuja path), Tatara (fast early form, disappointing evolution).

Chimera — The hybrid

Chimera Kagune combine skills from multiple types — typically a ranged component plus a melee finisher. These are the most expensive Kagune in the game and reward players who want the most versatile toolkits.

Playstyle: Depends on the specific Chimera weapon. Most combine a ranged opener with a powerful melee follow-up. Requires the highest Yen investment but offers the broadest coverage.

Strengths: Best toolkits, hybrid skills, highest ceiling.

Weaknesses: Extremely expensive. Some Chimera have slower animations that make them easier to punish despite their power.

Representative weapons: Hinami Fueguchi (control monster, S-tier), Tonakai (crowd control, B-tier), Kakujira (slow but powerful).

Kakuja — The transformation

Kakuja is not a base type but a transformation category available to specific eligible Kagune lines. When a Ghoul feeds on powerful targets repeatedly, they can unlock a Kakuja form that changes their Kagune appearance and grants new skills.

Playstyle: Transformation burst — Kakuja forms trade versatility for massive short-duration damage windows. Best used as a finisher or to break stalemates.

Strengths: Highest burst potential in the game, visually distinctive, psychologically intimidating.

Weaknesses: Gated behind specific unlock conditions that require significant RC investment. Not all Kagune have viable Kakuja paths.

Representative weapons: Kaneki Kakuja (from Ken Kaneki line), Nishiki Kakuja (budget route).

Which type should you choose?

  • Pick Ukaku if you enjoy ranged pressure, kiting, and mobile combat
  • Pick Koukaku if you enjoy block-and-punish, tanky brawls
  • Pick Rinkaku if you want a balanced, forgiving kit for learning the game
  • Pick Bikaku if you prioritize speed and repositioning over raw power
  • Pick Chimera if you want the broadest toolkit and have the Yen to invest
  • Pursue Kakuja if you want maximum burst and are willing to complete the unlock conditions
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common RoGhoul questions.

Which Kagune type is the best?

No single type is objectively best. Rinkaku (Ken Kaneki) is the most recommended for new players due to its balanced and forgiving kit. Ukaku types excel in skilled hands for ranged pressure. The right type depends on your playstyle.

What is the difference between Chimera and Kakuja?

Chimera is a Kagune category — a type of biological weapon with hybrid skills. Kakuja is a transformation available to certain eligible Kagune after feeding milestones — it changes your existing Kagune into a more powerful form with new skills.

Do Kagune types affect Focus allocation?

Indirectly. Each type rewards different stat priorities — Ukaku benefits more from Speed for repositioning, Koukaku benefits from Durability for tanking. See the Focus Builds guide for type-specific recommendations.

Can I change my Kagune type without losing my Focus?

Yes. Swapping Kagune does not reset your Focus points — only your RC progress resets. You can experiment with different types while keeping your stat allocation.
